Salvage wasn't my first science fiction plot idea, but it is a story about a first contact event between humans and a race called the Volgiians. As it explains some things about two different alien races and where they originate from, I feel it makes sense for it be the initial novel of the series.
Some Fun Facts
- The Volgiians are basically a gelatinous people (similar to Jello®). They secrete a metallic shell that protects their delicate membranes. Those most honored are those who sacrifice their shell to decorate their leader's fortress.
- They switch sexes, the female becomes male and the male, female, in a process, of which it is taboo to speak of, called tglar.
- Their society is matriarchal and the males have no rights. They cannot own, purchase or make binding decisions about anything. Most Volgiians pair up with another who has a complimentary tglar schedule, so one of them is always female and able to protect property and take care of any purchases or legal matters that may come up.
